Hi! I've been brewing using my home grown hops for several years now, but always sort of guess at when to harvest them. Anyone know specifically what to look for to know when the hops are in their prime and at their best stage for harvest. It's feelin like soon here in Oregon. Thanks

"The most obvious sign of readiness in the development of lupulin glands, small yellow grains clinging to the base of the bracts. A mature hop cone will be heavy with this yellow powder. When you begin to suspect that the hops are nearing maturity, pick a cone and pull or cut it open. The lupulin should be a dark yello gold, and there should be a strong hop aroma....
When past their prime for picking, hop cones will turn tan along the edges of the bracts and develop brown spots. Finally they turn brown and start to open. Don't use any hops that have turned completely brown." -

Wed, August 13, 2008 - 8:07 PMHi, I saw your post while searching for info on when to harvest hops. I just started mine and 2 types are begining to look ready, I think! What did you end up doing? Also, I have been looking into finding out how much to use to replace store bought pellet hops? Have any reciepes using the whole hops that you have tried? Did you grind them up or anything to use them? Thank you for any insight you may offer, I see the post is a few years old, how has using your own hops worked out? I love to brew, thank you again!
